**************April 9, 2001***************
This publication is, and always has been, a forum for ideas and their
exchange in the community. Space has been offered to all candidates for
office, including the School Board. Normally, any correspondence
received would be posted on Reader Letters. Since there have been
disturbing developments in the May 5, 2001 race, however, a letter from
School Board Place 2 Candidate Fred Mraz will be posted in its entirety
in this Newsletter.
The letter is in response to three questions asked by this writer
regarding Mr. Mraz's bid for office. Following the letter, readers will
be advised of disturbing allegations brought to the attention of this
publication by the candidate. An investigation by The Ledger has indeed
begun:
***************
These three questions I have been asked: Why am I running? Well,
I've lived in Llano County for several years and have willingly
participated with our youth, seeking to do all I can to give them a
direction in life and love for learning, and how to be someone and
something!
Since doing so, I've found that the kids in Llano County have been
dealt a raw deal in which they have no voice and been wrongly accused
in many cases I have followed. School officials seem to glorify
themselves in punishing, rather than being fair in how it's
administered. Basically, selective discipline!
In this unjust world, we definitely need discipline, but just as
importantly we need people who will administer discipline fairly to
all. And these administrators have to be held accountable for the
actions they take.
I've noticed there is no PTA. Nor parent-teacher cooperation, other
than the faculty speaks and the parents are to listen. This must cease.
We as parents are the first line of defense for our children, teaching
them right from wrong. When our rights as parents become void, we all
lose.
These are some of the things I believe Llano ISD would love to have
happen: Waive all parental and student rights. Believe no word that
comes out of our children's mouths. This has been a way of life for
Llano County kids.
Well, I say no more. I intend to run for the Board and stand as a
taxpaying parent to give all parents a voice in what takes place in
their children's education. And see to it all school officials and
personnel are held accountable!
Second question that was asked of me: How am I qualified? Good
question. Well first, I've been a parent for better than half my life
doing everything I could to teach my kids right from wrong!
Second, over the last twenty years I have taken in more troubled
kids, adults, and families than I can count, in need of someone to
provide, if nothing more than a positive influence of hope!
Third, it has come to my attention there have been many other kids
besides my own who have had raw dealings with some of our great
"faculty" and "supervisors". Many of these students have been dealt
with selective discipline. There have been reports of ridicule to the
point where parents have sought other alternatives to have their
children educated.
Fourth, as a taxpayer from whom Llano County expects to make a
small fortune over the rest of my life, I feel I have the right to see
to it that I get the most for my money. For all kids, created equal
under God. And that our children be treated properly and with respect
by school officials, as school officials would expect from our
children.
Fifth, I've been a strong influence upon adults and kids of all
ages, urging them to strive to be the best they can be, to understand
they have a voice, and that if you speak enough, you will be heard. And
if you see something wrong, the only way to fix it is to get involved.
That's why I'm running for office!
Sixth, I have the requisite "tools", the ability, and determination
to give the people back a voice. A say over what happens to their
children as well as the taxpayers.
Third question asked was: Precisely, what will you do if elected?
All I can to see to it that the children of Llano County have all the
tools needed to succeed in life. To give back the parents a voice so
that they might not be taken so lightly. To provide parents and
taxpayers the knowledge of how our children are being taught, how
school funds are being spent, and to hold all school personnel
accountable for their actions.
Fred Mraz
Candidate, School Board Place 2
Kingsland April 9, 2001
*******************************
Mr. Mraz has approached this writer with disturbing allegations that
School officials may have deliberately attempted to derail his bid for
a place on the School Board. LISD Superintendent Jack Patton was
informed by Mr. Mraz of his intention to run for office just days prior
to two sexual harassment allegations conveniently lodged by LISD
students against the candidate's son, Beau Mraz.
A "disciplinary hearing" was held March 23, 2001. The "hearing" was
tape-recorded by Mr. Mraz and was attended by the candidate, his son,
Tim Glover, and Earl Jarrett. This writer has listened to the tape.
Indeed it raises serious questions of due process and fairness to the
accused.
Monday, March 26, 2001, Mr. Mraz returned to the Superintendent's
office and talked to Mr. Patton personally. According to Mr. Mraz, the
first words out of the mouth of the Superintendent to the candidate
were approximately: "Oh, by the way. The disciplinary hearing had
nothing to do with your running for office."
Fascinating, isn't it? Convenient, as well. This publication has
begun an investigation into whether or not the "disciplinary hearing"
was in fact designed to derail Mr. Mraz's bid for a place on the School
Board. There will be much more to come...
Being a forum for the exchange of ideas and in fairness to all,
equal space is offered by this publication to all candidates for the
School Board.
Changing the subject and on a totally different issue, the vicious
assault on the Fourth Amendment continues unabated. On April 2, 2001 a
fascist U.S. Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision further eviscerated the
right to counsel during police questioning of a suspect. -- Should the
accused already have an attorney in one investigation, he or she is not
entitled to have the lawyer present during questioning of a related
crime. Sadly, the Founders must be turning in their graves.
Furthering the apparent goal of a fascist police state, the Court
has outrageously given corrupt and abusive police officers the green
light to do an end-run around the Sixth Amendment right to counsel. ...
Adolph and Benito must indeed be laughing their asses off from their
fiery perches.
Not surprisingly, the three most extreme members of the Court, --
Rehnquist, Scalia, and Thomas, were joined by O'Connor and Kennedy.
Interestingly, the ruling involved a Texas case where the Texas Court
of Criminal Appeals had earlier ordered a confession to be thrown out.
Bottom line? Open war has been declared on the Fourth Amendment by an
outrageously biased fascist Supreme Court.
In deference to "detained" American naval personnel in China,
pointed commentary regarding Bush "Administration" handling of the
incident will be delayed.
Think the Bush budget and tax cut will line your pockets? Think again.
The $1.2 trillion "cut" in taxes passed by the Senate does not fully
kick in until years down the road. ... If ever. More importantly, who
can accurately predict the economy 5-7 years from now? Most pointedly,
think legislators will hold the line on spending? Think again. After
all, there is little substantive difference between both major
political parties. Why aren't legislators more concerned with paying
down the national debt?
Of equal immediate urgency, think the financial situation of Llano
Memorial Hospital will improve soon? ... Or that "President" George
"The Tush" Bush cares? The Bush "Administration" budget slashes health
programs for the uninsured. Readers are reminded indigent health care
reimbursement, -- as well as egregious looting by Hospital employees,
have indeed contributed heavily to current financial difficulties
experienced by LMHS. Fascinating, isn't it?
Inexplicably, the media continues to cover N.Y. Sen. Hillary Clinton in
considerable detail. Apparently, the freshman Senator has ruled out
running for the Presidency. Supposedly, forever. Who cares? ... Most
pointedly, believe it when you see it, no? All joking aside, however,
the press has done little to investigate a serious incident in the
current First Lady's past.
Laura Welch Bush, 17 at the time, ran a stop sign in a fatal crash
in Midland, Nov. 6, 1963, killing 17-year-old Michael Douglas.
Reportedly, accident records indicated Mrs. Bush had committed two
violations contributing to the accident. One box checked by police
apparently read "disregard stop sign or light". The other checked box
was illegible. Inexplicably, no charges were filed in the case.
While the fatal incident is indeed ancient history, -- occurring some
38 years ago, think the Douglas family feels the same? Running a stop
sign today, leading to a fatality, usually results in serious charges
being filed. Including, manslaughter. Yet, the First Lady escaped
prosecution. ... Didn't even receive a ticket for running the stop
sign.
While Mrs. Bush indeed "remains unable to talk about it" to this day,
think it's due more to political considerations than true remorse? Good
question. ... And most pointedly, why the hell shouldn't the question
be asked? After all, why aren't Republicans exposed to the same
scrutiny Democrats were over the last eight years? -- This coming from
a political independent who did NOT vote for Clinton, Bush, or Gore?
Friends, serious consideration is given by this writer to simply
walking away from The Ledger due to a glaring lack of financial support
from the readership. As strongly asserted in Special Edition V65,
lacking any vested interest and no longer owning property in Llano
County, why continue in the absence of financial support from a
cowardly and selfish community? -- Despite a combined Llano Ledger and
Llano Ledger 2 visitor count exceeding 91,700? ... Two years, now. For
what?
