... Hey, Sheriff? Is it true Llano County Attorney Becky Lange has advised you to stay out of the "Berardi Property Rights Denial-Damage To Pace Arrow-Deputy Leroy Rodriguez, Badge #764" fiasco? That right, Bill? Isn't that obstruction of justice? Also true your deputies have advised the Bolens to accept the status quo and not force the no-trespassing issue with Greene? If so, isn't that also obstruction and official oppression? When will you do your job, Bill? As an elected official, you answer to the public, forget? -- No honor? ... No honor at all? If the foregoing allegations are indeed true, didn't you swear an oath to uphold the law and Constitution? Why aren't you doing so? No guts?

Your deputy has been accused of abusing authority. What action have you taken other than ignore the complaint? Why aren't both Rodriguez and the County Attorney under criminal investigation? The County Attorney appears to be obstructing justice, accepting the word of Greene in lieu of two surveyor companies who strongly assert otherwise. Both the County Attorney and District Attorney have ignored complaints. Par for the course in Llano County, isn't it? Failed to do their jobs. No surprise there, right, Bill? Both receiving 'special consideration' up to and/or including a bribe from Greene? Regardless, clearly, no justice in Nazi Llano County. Bottom line? Desperate need for an outside criminal investigation. Conveniently, forget? This County is ruled by men, certainly not rule of law and the United States Constitution.

Why are you still sitting on this information? What are you hiding, Sheriff? What is the identity of the officers who killed Wise? Too gutless to release this information to the public that pays your salary and that of your goons? Reportedly, there were three officers involved in the shooting. Who the hell are they?

When will the goddamned 'law' 'enforcement' community finally stop making excuses for engaging in outrageous criminal activity including blatant murder, violent assault, sexual assault, theft, drug trafficking, etc.? List can go on and on. Protecting its own no matter what it does or doesn't do? Convenient, isn't it, Sheriff? Equally pointedly, why hasn't Llano County Deputy Leroy Rodriguez, Badge #764 been held criminally accountable for egregious abuse of power involving denial of property rights to a Kingsland property owner? To say nothing of consequent resultant physical damage done to a motor home on that property. Why are you protecting this clueless son of a bitch, Sheriff?

Why hasn't he been prosecuted for official oppression? Where is financial compensation for the damage this jackbooted piece of human excrement is responsible for? Ferociously pointedly, why are the District Attorney and the County Attorney continuing to protect this jackbooted piece of shit? He and others like him present an exigent threat to life, liberty, all civil and constitutional rights and liberties.

Equally to the point, why are your jackbooted pieces of human excrement refusing to enforce Berardi's property rights? Your goons have failed to take action against Theresa Ahrens when she tore down a no trespassing sign and barrier on Berardi's property. Have you, your goons, and/or Madam County Attorney been bribed by Johnny Greene?

Ahrens frequently drives all the way through Berardi's property. Coup de grace? When Berardi complained to Llano County Deputy Idle about the trespassing, the officer's response was insane. Said the Sheriff told him to tell Berardi since Ahrens believes she owns his property she can't be charged with trespassing. Perfect Catch-22, right, Sheriff? You're not fit for office, Bill. Bribed by Johnny Greene?

Why is Theresa Ahrens allowed by your goons to dictate what vehicles can and cannot be parked on Berardi's property? Ahrens claims she has proof the property belongs to her where the vehicle was parked. Has failed to produce it. Surveyors say otherwise. Back up Berardi. Yet, your jackbooted bastards refuse to enforce Berardi's property rights. Why? Somebody lining somebody's pockets, Sheriff?

Ms. Ahrens micro-mini portable 'house' is parked on an unused unmarked Llano County road. Imagine that. Madam County Attorney well-aware. Has done nothing. Shit squat. Egregiously ignored her oath of office. Someone bribing you, Becky? Lining your pockets, Counselor? Paying you not to sell the unused unmarked County road to Berardi? Doesn't the County want and need the sale money, to say nothing of the resultant tax income?

No question, County and State agencies remain determinedly, concertedly, achingly incapable of criminal investigation of their own. Precisely, why a new federal agency desperately needs to be created whose sole function would be to investigate, arrest, charge, prosecute corrupt, abusive, criminal officers, prosecutors, and judges in a special court whose sole function would be to adjudicate only such cases. As you're well aware, we have an outrageously corrupt, abusive, achingly inept Llano County Sheriff's Office here in Nazi Llano County. Worse, you and your office aid and abet these SS jackbooted bastards in black. The issue at the moment is the same it's been the last six months.

How is it two surveyor companies, the Appraisal District, the Tax Office, the Precinct 3 Commissioner, even the goddamned Sheriff himself now states Kingsland resident James Berardi owns the lots in contention all these months?

Yet, you ludicrously assert that's not the County's legal position. It's not? Why not? You claim you're not a real estate expert. Rather than accept the advice of two surveyor companies, the Precinct 3 Commissioner, the Appraisal District, the Tax Office, and even the Sheriff himself, you've inexplicably chosen to follow the advice of property owner Johnny Greene, -- who conveniently happens to be reportedly in the oil industry.

Question to be asked. Could you have received any 'consideration' in return, -- up to and including a bribe? Only way to know for sure is for the District Attorney to conduct a criminal investigation. Apparently, there has been none. If not, why not?

Equally pointedly, why hasn't Llano County Deputy Leroy Rodriguez, Badge #764 been held criminally accountable for egregious abuse of power involving denial of property rights to this Kingsland property owner? To say nothing of consequent resultant physical damage done to a motor home on that property.

Our achingly useless, worthless, gutless Sheriff has ignored an email vis a vis the damage this jackbooted thug is responsible for. Interestingly, his fellow officers believe him to be an idiot. Yet, the Sheriff continued to defend this piece of human excrement until he realized this entire fiasco would not be swept under the carpet.

Rodriguez is indeed an idiot. Would you believe this piece of crap ordered the motor home to be moved on to an unmarked unused Llano County road? That motor home has indeed been moved back to where it was parked before Rodriguez forced it to be moved. Why hasn't the County paid for the cost of moving it back? To say nothing of the damage.

Equally pointedly, why is it the County has allowed Theresa Ahrens to park and live in her tiny cottage on that very same road? Why hasn't she been evicted by the County? Why was she assessed taxes on an adjacent improvement she doesn't own?

Why is it, Counselor, Johnny Greene is paying for the attorney retained by Ms. Ahrens? Is Greene attempting to make this all go away by bribery? Greene has also informed Berardi he is going to sue. For what? Has Greene lost his mind?

What about Wells who installed a $4500 septic system on a lot turns out he does not own as a result of Greene, an outrageously inept County, to say nothing of the Llano County Attorney who remains equally determinedly clueless?

How about Bolen who hasn't a pot to piss in, but was nonetheless f--ked over by Greene to say nothing of an egregiously inept County, to say nothing of you and your goddamned equally incompetent office?

None of this is going away, Counselor, -- any time soon. Will not be swept under the carpet as all the other crap going on in this hell hole County. Not a chance. It's time the public be fully informed. -- Know what we're dealing with here and how 'law' 'enforcement' operates in this hell hole County. If these jackbooted bastards are not reined in, the life lost could be many others courtesy of a law enforcement system that is no longer accountable to anyone. ... Right, Sheriff? TL? "Sonny Boy?" Madam County Attorney?

The Sheriff seems to have no clue the people who pay him and his goons are entitled to know whom is killing whom and why. This shit always seems to be swept under the carpet. Ignored. The attitude of these jackbooted sons of bitches is trust us. They can't be. They've lied too many times. Refuse to be accountable to anyone. We live in a goddamned fascist police-state where law enforcement does as it pleases. Usually, with impunity. This has to change.

The Texas Rangers have become rubber stamp to atrocities committed by law enforcement. This also has to change. No one is holding law enforcement accountable any longer. No one. No one in state or federal government. This is precisely why Ferguson triggered such an uproar. There was no justice there. None here. None anywhere. Officers are abusive, corrupt, inept.

Falsely ticket and arrest the innocent to line County coffers. Court fees charged continue to be horrendous. -- Aren't taxpayers already looted to pay these costs? Aren't you not only double f--king those falsely accused, but taxpayers also hellaciously looted to pay the very same costs? Yet, the criminal bastards in power in Llano continue to pile on the fees. This is nothing more than goddamned bullshit. This money finds its way into the pockets of the corrupt, abusive bastards who falsely believe they run and own this hell hole.

Would you believe the last time the Sheriff's Office happened to be 'audited' during the Garrett regime, reportedly, auditors couldn't figure out what went where and why? Yet, surprise, surprise. Nothing was done. There has to be transparency. There is none. Why would these thieving bastards want any? ... Right, Sheriff? TL? How else could they so easily steal and loot with virtual impunity? Worse, this reinforces jackbooted power in this goddamned, godforsaken hell hole County.

The public has a right to know the histories of the Sheriff's goons. Clearly, the Sheriff doesn't think so. That is, where they came from. Why they left where they were. What is happening here is the Sheriff is using 'personnel matters' as a convenient excuse to deny the public access to the history of outrageously corrupt, abusive, inept officers who are no more than criminals themselves.

He's protecting his outrageously corrupt, abusive, inept jackbooted bastards. Worse, the standards imposed by sheriff's offices statewide with the exception of metropolitan counties are well below those of DPS and city police departments. Why? So the corruption, abuse, ineptness, and outright stealing can continue unabated? This has to change. ... Can't have that, can we? Sheriff? TL?

The public should understand Llano County authorities have it all sewn up. Did you know the Texas Attorney General does not have the authority to investigate and prosecute County authorities on his own? The District Attorney has to call for an investigation by the Texas Rangers. Then, the State can prosecute if it so chooses.

Consequently? Guess what? Nothing will happen. Nothing ever does. The goddamned corruption continues unabated until you, the public, pressure authorities. Precisely, why we all enjoy the 'best' government money can buy. Literally. Without question, the corrupt, abusive, inept sons of bitches are all bought and paid for. Firmly clamped to the taxpayer tit. Dependent on money looted from innocent citizens caught in their web. Phony fines and court costs cleverly designed to f--k the innocent and enrich the pieces of shit who falsely believe they run and own Llano County. Right, Sheriff? TL? "Sonny Boy?" Madam County Attorney?

Interestingly, the former Sheriff and District Attorney were reportedly forced to retire after an outrageous scandal involving a drunk driving police officer from out of town. Including special treatment of the drunken son of a bitch that no other citizen caught doing the same would have been afforded. An honest, honorable Llano County Deputy suffered the consequences. Forget? Great officers do not last in this hell hole County. ... Right, Sheriff? TL? "Sonny Boy?" Madam County Attorney?

With all ongoing abuse in this goddamned County, one thing remains for damned sure. We're just getting started, Sheriff. You will continue to be exposed for whom and what you and your corrupt, abusive, inept jackbooted bastards have become, truly are, not what you phonies purport to be, that is, how you continue to f--k over a public you've falsely sworn to protect and defend. -- Exposure, the only way short of an unwanted dreaded revolution to force desperately needed change in a goddamned fascist police-state. If so, an aggressively stupid, achingly gutless public gets what it truly deserves. One of the most corrupt, abusive, inept 'law' 'enforcement' agencies in our formerly great country.

While the business and church communities stood tall during the recent Kingsland flood catastrophe, there was one glaring exception. On 10-17-18, the Antlers Coffee Shop closed due to storm-related failure of the Kingsland water system. Patrons, however, are routinely allowed to get online outside even when the shop is closed.

A long-term coffee shop customer entered the hotel lobby to ask the desk clerk whether wifi was still up and running after the catastrophe. She said it was and told the patron he could get online inside the closed shop. She then asked him to have another regular customer who had just arrived outside to come in and get out of the cold as well.

Antlers co-proprietor Rick apparently quickly got wind of both customers, made quite a jackass of himself emulating the petulant narcissist currently occupying the Oval Office. Aggressive stupidity at a time the Kingsland business community is indeed suffering, can least afford it. Further proof positive of the old adage 'can fix ignorant, can't fix stupid.'

Why would, why should both customers put up with this? Think this hasn't happened to others?

Uncommon Valor. As always, when an officer does something heroic and/or of exceptional benefit to the community, it leads in this publication. Always. -- This time, a former officer who stood tall.

NBC News reports:

"William Pepe says the problems had existed for at least a year when the chief of police ordered Pepe into his office to scold him for not writing enough traffic tickets. Pepe, who was the Pompton Lakes Police Department’s only Black officer at the time, said the meeting was part of a pattern of disparate treatment he endured on the job and at the hands of Chief Derek Clark. It is one of several allegations Pepe, 41, made in a legal notice announcing that he intends to sue the borough, its council and police department, alleging that his career trajectory “came to a grinding halt” after he expressed concerns to his union about his supervisors’ conduct. Pepe alleges he was subjected to a hostile and retaliatory work environment that led to “work-related mental health issues” and culminated in his “constructive termination,” which occurs when an employer’s conduct effectively forces an employee to resign. “The race and disability discrimination and harassment were so severe, and the ongoing retaliation was so intense, that he had no option but to quit,” his attorney said in the legal filing, known as a notice of tort claim. Pepe, who under New Jersey law has to wait six months after sending the notice to file the suit, plans to seek at least $2.5 million in damages."

Not surprisingly:

"The police department, which has 24 officers, said it had no comment about the allegations in the claim. Erik DeLine, president of the borough council, said: “Beyond the fact the claims are entirely false and that the Borough will vigorously defend itself and its officers, I have no further comment.”

Get this:

"Pepe, who is an Army veteran, joined the department in 2015 and was promoted to the detective bureau four years later, he said in an interview and in the notice of tort claim. He was also assigned to the narcotics task force at the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and was a firearms instructor for the police department. But he alleges that he was reassigned to the patrol division in 2021 in retaliation for saying that he wanted to file a grievance with the department’s union because he had twice been “forced” to stay home from work for an extended period and to use sick days when his son was sick, even though both had tested negative for Covid-19. Lt. Anthony Rodriguez, whom Pepe described as Clark’s “right hand man,” tried to discourage him from filing a grievance at a union meeting in the spring of 2021, Pepe said. Then an “extremely aggressive and intimidating” Clark warned him the department would fight the grievance. “Browbeaten and fearful of retaliation,” the notice says, Pepe decided against filing the grievance. He was reassigned to the less prestigious patrol post a month later. Clark and Rodriguez said they had no comment about the allegations in Pepe’s notice."

Apparently, too difficult to credibly defend the indefensible. LOL.

"Pepe said Clark forced him to disclose what was supposed to be a confidential conversation with the department’s resiliency program officer about his mental state after the demotion. According to Pepe, Clark later warned other officers that they could be disciplined if they had similar conversations with the officer, who is a confidential resource with whom officers can discuss professional or personal matters. Clark also lectured him about writing too few tickets on patrol, Pepe alleges, and threatened to put him on a performance improvement plan. According to Pepe, Clark and Rodriguez repeatedly told him that the mayor and borough council were unhappy with the department’s ticket numbers and that if they did not improve, the council may “mess with your healthcare” during contract negotiations. He said in the legal notice that officers who wrote fewer tickets did not receive the same dressing down and warning."

Doesn't end there.

"On another occasion, he received a written reprimand for giving away department property after he said he gave the Velcro badge from his uniform to a 4-year-old boy whose mother told Pepe the boy wanted to be a police officer. The badge can be purchased by anyone at a police uniform store, Pepe and the notice of tort claim said. He said in an interview that he believes the retribution was partly motivated by race. Pepe said he was the department’s only Black officer when he resigned and only the second Black officer in its history. Pompton Lakes has a population of roughly 11,000 and is about 30 miles from Manhattan. About 84% of its residents are white, and less than 1% are Black or African American. “Policing has ultimately come down to if you’re a part of the good old boys club,” he said. “That’s what it really comes down to. It’s not about the public anymore. They’re putting their own interests first, before everybody else, and they’ll do whatever they’ve got to do, just like they did to me, to get a guy out.”

Gets worse:

"The constant harassment and “barrage of indignities” wore on Pepe and began to affect his personal life, the notice of tort claim says. He later failed a fitness for duty test and was required to complete inpatient treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder in first responders and veterans. While on leave, he learned that he was the subject of five internal investigations for various violations of department policy, all of which he disputes. When he returned to work after treatment and a separate surgery, according to the notice, he requested a “light duty assignment” and was offered a position in night dispatch. “Claimant’s dispatch work assignment was another clear indication of disparate treatment and further retaliation,” according to the tort claim. “Specifically, between September 2022 through February 2023, four other officers (all of whom were white, and none of whom had angered Chief Clark due to their union advocacy) were fully accommodated and placed on true light duty. They were assigned to do ‘busy work’ in the Department during the day shift.” None of the white officers was required to work the overnight dispatch shift, “which was extremely busy and mentally taxing,” according to the tort notice. Pepe submitted his resignation in January. “At that point, I felt so pressured and I felt just so beaten down by the process that it’s like, there’s nothing I can do,” he said."

Sad, isn't it? Yet, despite all, this officer stood tall. Uncommon Valor.

"Ruby Flores, a Mexican American woman raised in East Los Angeles and Norwalk, beamed with pride as she spoke with NBC4 about her new position. While ecstatic she successfully catapulted her career into a major leadership position, she said that the weight of the responsibility associated with this role in both the department and the public isn’t lost on her. “I want to make sure if I can impact young girls and women in a positive way by being in this leadership position, then I want to do that and will continue to do that,” Flores said."

Hat's off. About time LAPD finally smartened up.

"Appointed to the department in 1994, Flores said she gained interest in joining the force while studying criminal justice at Long Beach State University. A less-than-ideal experience with a different police agency in her personal life further cemented her goal of becoming an officer. “I was about 21 years old and I was in a car accident by myself and I was ultimately stranded and victimized by a stranger in an attempted assault,” Flores shared. “Ultimately, they found the suspect and I went to court. The suspect was arrested but the process is what was eye-opening to me because as a woman, I felt that I was not treated appropriately.” According to Flores, the process made her feel like she was a suspect although she was the one who was targeted. That made her want to make a difference. “I wanted to come and be part of the change instead of contributing to that negative dialogue,” Flores said. She shared that her journey with the LAPD was met with some confusion by people who questioned why she wanted to become an officer. She said she knew entering a male-dominated workforce would come with some challenges but proved herself to be exceptional and was quickly accepted by her peers."

How about that? Quite encouraging.

“It’s been an honor,” Flores said. “It’s been a long, uphill battle in some regards because it’s not easy to rise up these ranks and not everyone’s entitled to this rank, which is why I believe it to be an even greater honor.” Now that she’s been appointed as a deputy chief, her goal is to continue improving diversity and inclusion in the force as well as inspire girls and women to follow their ambitions, no matter who tries to dissuade them. “Young girls can do anything they want,” Flores said. “They just have to be open to it, be confident and work hard, and they will realize that they’re capable of so much more than they thought they were.”

Highly reminiscent of our outrageously bought and paid for judiciary, Llano County prosecutors, Sheriff Bill Blackburn and his criminal SS jackbooted bastards in black who continue to egregiously disgrace themselves and the badge, do as they please regardless of the law and Constitution, carefully consider the following. It's appalling. Runs against the grain of everything our formerly great country once stood for. No longer.

No justice. The Associated Press reports:

"It was in the den that Karen Goodwin most strongly felt her son’s presence: On the coffee table were his ashes, inside a clock with its hands forever frozen at 12:35 a.m., the moment that a doctor had pronounced him dead. As Goodwin swept and dusted the room, she’d often find herself speaking to her son, a soothing one-way conversation that helped her keep his spirit alive. She’d tell him about his nephews and nieces shopping for backpacks for the new school year, or the latest from the Bristol Motor Speedway and her motorcycle ride along Highway 421, one of the most scenic routes in the state. “I wish you had been there,” she’d say wistfully."

The pain of a mother who's lost her son clearly knows no bounds.

"Austin Hunter Turner died in 2017, on a night that Goodwin has rewound and replayed again and again, trying to make sense of what happened. Something just didn’t add up. There was the race to his apartment, the panic of watching her “baby boy” struggle to breathe, the chaos of paramedics in the kitchen. Her feelings of helplessness as she prayed for him to live. Her emotions have been painfully conflicting. There was the deep shame that Turner died of a drug overdose. The doubts when her own memory diverged with the official police narrative. More recently, anger and outrage. She now believes she has spent all these years living with a lie that has tested what was once a resolute faith in the police, paramedics and the legal system."

The truth is devastating. The betrayal an evisceration of trust that has no end.

"Goodwin’s son is among more than 1,000 people across the United States who died over a decade after police restrained them in ways that are not supposed to be fatal, according to an investigation by The Associated Press in collaboration with FRONTLINE (PBS) and the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism. Turner’s case highlights a central finding of the AP investigation: In the aftermath of fatal police encounters involving the use of Tasers, brute force and other tactics, a lack of accountability permeates the justice system. From the police officers at the scene and their commanders to prosecutors and medical examiners, the system shields officers from scrutiny."

Lack of accountability has been a problem for decades. Nothing new. Precisely, why there is such profound lack of faith and trust in law enforcement.

"Goodwin and her family are examples of what can happen when police tactics go too far in such a system: The truth can be lost. Like the Goodwins, hundreds of families have been left to wrestle with incorrect or incomplete narratives that have recast the lives of the dead, and re-ordered the lives of those left behind. Goodwin was in bed when her phone rang. It was her son’s girlfriend, Michelle Stowers. She was frantic. Turner had just collapsed on the kitchen floor. “He’s not moving,” Stowers cried. “I don’t think he’s breathing. What should I do?” The mother’s heart hammered. “Call 911. I’m on my way,” Goodwin said, her mind racing through terrible possibilities. Was her son alive? Dead? He’d had a few seizures, but they were nothing serious. As she sped to Turner’s apartment on that warm humid night in August 2017, Goodwin called and alerted her husband, Brian, and older son, Dustin. She also dialed her sister but could only utter: “Pray for Hunter.”

Imagine the terror.

"When she arrived, Goodwin found her son gasping for breath on the linoleum of his kitchen floor. His eyes were vacant. His body shook. Foam spilled from his mouth. The mother thought her son might die right then. A paramedic arrived, and Goodwin told him that Turner had suffered minor seizures before. “Hunter, this is momma,” she said, kneeling, pressing an oxygen mask to his face. The front door burst open, and police officers and firefighters swarmed into the tiny apartment. Medics had requested help restraining Turner to treat him. They thought Turner was resisting. As the room filled with voices and equipment, Goodwin stepped away, relieved. She and her husband and children had always admired paramedics and police. They were heroes. And she knew they’d do everything in their power to save her son’s life."

Think so? The mother received quite a rude awakening:

"Then an officer shouted: “Get up off the floor!” Goodwin heard another say, “You’re going to get tased if you keep it up.” She felt bewildered. Her motherly instincts kicked in. “Please,” she implored them, “don’t hurt him more than you have to!” The officers were pinning Turner facedown on a recliner. A few minutes later, he was strapped to a stretcher, again facedown. Goodwin followed them to the waiting ambulance. She peered inside: Her son seemed like he was unconscious, with a strange sort of mask pulled over his head. His legs were bound."

His treatment? Appalling. Contraindicated.

"Goodwin felt powerless. That was her son. She’d give her life for him. Goodwin followed the ambulance to the Bristol Regional Medical Center. After a long wait, the emergency room doctor said that “for all intents and purposes” Turner was dead. “Your son is young and strong,” he said. “We’re going to continue working on him for that reason.” He paused, before continuing: “We’ll take you back — if you think you can handle it.” Steps away, she saw a team of doctors and nurses trying to get Turner’s heart pumping again. She stared at her son’s blank face when they used a defibrillator to try to shock him back to life. Nothing worked. “We can keep going,” the doctor said."

The mother's response? Uncommon Valor:

"Goodwin waved her hand. She needed a moment. Her son wasn’t moving. He didn’t respond to her voice, or the life-saving measures. When she’d touched his chest, it felt like Jell-O, because the paramedics, nurses and doctors had crushed everything in there while trying to save him. Goodwin knew what she had to do. “That’s enough,” she said. “My baby needs to rest now.” As she sat in the sterile hospital waiting room, she wondered: Why her son? He’s such a gentle, kind soul, Goodwin thought. Everyone loved him. He was boyishly handsome, with light brown hair and a small goatee and chinstrap of hair along his jawline. A few inches short of 6 feet, Turner had a strong, outdoorsy kind of look. He was outgoing, ready to chat even with strangers.

"The 23-year-old Turner worked odd jobs to help make ends meet — lately it was refurbishing furniture. “I have plenty of time to grow up,” he told his parents. Now, as she sat there, she felt those words reverberating in her head. An overdose? At 4 a.m., Goodwin looked up and saw her husband rushing into the waiting room. She needed him now, more than ever."

Imagine the heartbreak.

“What happened?” he asked. Goodwin said she didn’t know. She said she’d overheard a Bristol police officer declare that Turner had died of a drug overdose. The parents knew their son smoked marijuana. They also knew he got high using Suboxone, a drug used to wean people off opioids. But they didn’t think either drug could lead to an overdose. It didn’t make sense to Goodwin. Why were police saying this, she wondered. They had learned from Turner’s girlfriend that he had seemed fine when she got home from her late shift at Walmart. He hadn’t acted stoned. He had collapsed out of the blue. How could this be an overdose?"

Good question. ... It wasn't.

"After a memorial service, the Goodwins and two dozen of Turner’s friends honored his memory with a procession of motorcycles that climbed the sharp hills of the Appalachians. When they returned to Bristol, the group said their goodbyes. That night, Goodwin felt an emptiness in her soul. It would be a long time before she felt anything else. Brian went back to work after a month. Keeping busy helped him deal with his grief. But Goodwin couldn’t find an outlet. The mother tattooed her left arm with an image of her son’s thumbprint, and a clock set at 12:35. The tattoo artist had mixed traces of Turner’s ashes into the ink. Mother and son had enjoyed a special connection. He was a daredevil, a fun-loving kid. Whenever something went wrong — like the time he hurt himself jumping off a neighbor’s porch, or crashing her car into a utility pole as he tried to teach himself to drive a stick shift — he’d run straight to her. And she was always there to say, “It’s all right, Hunter. It’s all right.” Her son had always been there for her, too. When she had been diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and surgeons had removed one of her lungs and part of the other, her son had been the one to cheer her up. Every morning he’d sit next to his mother on the front porch, covering her with a blanket to keep her warm. Sometimes, he’d hold his mother’s trembling hands and whisper, “I love you. You’ll be OK, Mom. You’ll be OK.” Now, Goodwin wrestled with existential questions. Why did she fight so hard to beat cancer only to have her son die before her?"

Imagine the unrelenting pain she endured at his loss.

"As the years wore on, she found solace in the den, next to her son’s ashes. Sometimes, she’d think about the weeks and months following Turner’s death. When she obtained his autopsy report, it explained that he died of an overdose and repeated the official police version of events — that officers had gone to Turner’s apartment to help the young man, but he had been too stoned to cooperate. He fought them, and in the end, it had cost him his life. During that period, she had heard from police that they had tried to save Turner but couldn’t because of the drugs and his heart."

Think so? Time to wake up:

"A strong supporter of law enforcement, Goodwin desperately wanted to believe that police and paramedics had acted appropriately. But something was gnawing at her. Sometimes, she’d wake up in the middle of the night and hear the police officer threatening to fire his Taser. She’d recall that her son seemed to be having a seizure, and police held him down as he struggled to breathe. She had a hard time squaring those actions with what she knew in her heart was a medical emergency. But she just didn’t trust her recollection. She felt constantly at war — her memory pitted against her deep trust in the police."

Sadly, a big mistake. Trust egregiously unwarranted.

"And more times than not, she ended up pushing her doubts aside. Why would the police lie? She wanted to believe they had done everything they could to save her son."

Not so:

"On Aug. 14, she heard a knock on her door. When she opened it, she found two Associated Press reporters who asked if she wanted to know more about how her son had died. They had videos that the family had never seen. It was not easy for Goodwin to take them up on the offer. She knew it would be painful to revisit the worst night of her life."

She was entitled to the truth. Moreover, there could be no peace without the truth.

"After a week of agonizing, she sat down at her kitchen table and stared at a laptop before hitting play on the videos captured by police body cameras. The house was quiet except for the ping of a wind chime. The videos on her computer screen took Goodwin straight back. Body cameras worn by officers Eric Keller and Kevin Frederick had captured most of the interactions between police, paramedics and Turner. At times, the figures were difficult to make out, but one thing was clear: From the first moment police arrived, Turner was treated as a suspect resisting arrest — not as a patient facing an emergency. Goodwin watched in horror as police officers seemed to ignore the fact they had been dispatched to a medical call. Paramedics tried to force Turner onto his feet. He managed to get to his knees and momentarily stand. He took a single step and toppled over. Officers began screaming that Turner was resisting arrest, being combative and disobeying their commands. But the video seemed to show Turner was having a seizure. During a seizure, the muscles of the arms, legs and face stiffen, then begin to jerk. The videos showed that Turner was not throwing punches. He wasn’t kicking. When Keller bounded into the apartment, the video shows he yelled at the flailing Turner, who was pinned down in a recliner chair, “You’re going to get tased if you keep it up.” Despite paramedics warning him to wait, about 10 seconds later Keller pulled the trigger. Goodwin flinched when she heard the weapon’s loud pop followed by her son’s painful cry, as electricity coursed through his body. “You’re not going to win this battle,” another paramedic said."

Imagine the mother's reaction. Videos don't lie. Don't distort reality. Don't obliterate the truth.

"Goodwin was aghast. “Win what?” she thought. “This isn’t a contest. My son isn’t resisting. He’s dying!” The force didn’t end there. A paramedic sprayed a sedative up Turner’s nose, but most of it ended up on the medic. Police kept restraining Turner — even after he was handcuffed facedown on top of the recliner. They shackled his legs. When police transferred Turner to a gurney, they again put him facedown and strapped him in place. As blood spilled from his mouth, they covered his head with a spit hood. Once inside the ambulance, an officer sat on Turner’s body — even though he was still on his stomach. There was no rush to get him to the hospital. Instead, the body camera showed police officers and paramedics spent six minutes recounting the “battle.”

Getting their cookies off.

"It was only then that a paramedic noticed that Turner wasn’t breathing. Attendants removed the restraints, flipped him over, and began CPR. After about 10 minutes a paramedic walked into the frame. For a moment, he studied his colleagues who were working feverishly to revive Turner. He looked puzzled. “What the hell happened here?” he asked. “Did we cut his damn airway off?” They said no. As medics continued to work on Turner, the quizzical paramedic asked, “Y’all ain’t recording are you?” The officer turned off his body camera. Goodwin’s screen suddenly went blank. The Goodwins were livid. The videos raised disturbing questions. So, they decided to drill down into documents –- the police reports and autopsy –- to try to find answers. They soon became convinced the Bristol law enforcement community had lied about what had happened. Police didn’t include any statements in their reports from Karen Goodwin and her other son, Dustin, who had been in the apartment during the encounter. The events police described were a far cry from what Goodwin and her son had seen, or what was captured by the body cameras. They had made Turner out to be a villain."

Gets worse. Far worse.

"In a report, Lt. Greg Brown said the paramedics told police the young man was reaching for a knife on the kitchen counter. “A damn lie,” Goodwin thought. She’d seen a paramedic clear the counters before police arrived. Keller said he fired his Taser to stop Turner from fighting the medical personnel. Goodwin knew her son was dazed from the seizures. He wasn’t fighting back. They had no reason to stun him. Brown wrote in a report that Turner was fighting with medics when he arrived at the apartment. Goodwin was there. She saw no such thing. The body camera showed the opposite. Using buzzwords that painted the victim as the aggressor, Brown said Turner was “combative,” “agitated,” and had “ignored commands.” Brown noted that Turner had incredible strength like those under the influence of narcotics. Sullivan County District Attorney Barry Staubus had asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to examine Turner’s death. The investigator talked to witnesses and collected other details, Staubus said in an interview with AP. But after reviewing the TBI report and the body-camera footage, Staubus concluded that Turner died of a drug overdose. Nothing in the autopsy concluded the force and “restraint techniques” had caused or contributed to Turner’s death. The Goodwins expressed reservations about the state’s investigation and the prosecutor’s decision to shield police from accountability. They noted that state investigators never reached out to two of the most important witnesses: Karen Goodwin and Dustin. The state investigator had sent messages to Turner’s girlfriend and a neighbor at the scene, asking if they’d talk. They said yes. They never heard from the investigator again."

Surprised?

"Tennessee law keeps confidential the state’s investigation files, including those that detail fatal police encounters – unless the death involves a shooting. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation declined to discuss Turner’s death."

"Bristol’s chief of police would not answer questions when reached by the AP. Lt. Brown and officers Keller and Frederick did not reply to requests for comment, and neither did paramedics involved. The Bristol Fire Department did not respond to repeated requests for comment."

Surprised?

"The Goodwins were also perplexed by the autopsy report. Medical Examiner Eugene Scheuerman had declared Turner’s death an accident. He died of “Multiple Drug Toxicity” related to his use of the opioid in Suboxone and the psychoactive chemical in marijuana. An analysis found a “therapeutic to lethal level” of Suboxone in Turner’s system. Scheuerman added that “dilated cardiomyopathy” — a condition that affects the heart’s ability to pump enough oxygen-rich blood — was a contributing factor to Turner’s death. The autopsy report also repeated the police version of events. He didn’t note that police officers had placed Turner facedown and applied their body weight, a tactic that has long been criticized by experts for restricting breathing. The Goodwins wondered if the medical examiner had bothered to watch the police videos. Scheuerman has since died. Three experts who reviewed the documents for AP related to the incident disagreed with the autopsy findings: they said Turner did not die of a drug overdose. Instead, they said the Bristol police made critical errors that contributed to Turner’s death, including placing him facedown in a way that could restrict his breathing. “They didn’t understand the dangers of prolonged restraint and the pressure on his back,” said Jack Ryan, a police training expert and a former police officer and administrator."

Nothing quite like the truth to elicit a desperately needed wake up call.

"Karen and Brian Goodwin said they were still figuring out how to come to terms with the truth. They had blamed their son for his own demise and had felt incredibly guilty about that. They are now convinced he didn’t die from drugs — he was killed by police force. What hurts so much is that many people in town believe Turner died of an overdose. The parents still can hear the whispers in grocery stores and restaurants: Their boy would still be alive if he hadn’t been a drug user. “That’s the stigma that we’ve had to live with, ‘Your son was a dumbass.’ We’ve had to live with that as his legacy,” Brian said. “I want everyone to know the truth.”

Indeed. No question. Desperately needed all across our formerly great country. Clearly, law enforcement is not what it claims to be. Far from it.

"What’s next? A lawsuit? Becoming advocates for holding police accountable in arrest-related deaths so another family doesn’t go through their pain? They wonder how they will react if police pull them over along the road. They still support the police. But will they be respectful? Karen worries she may be running out of time. Her health, fragile from the cancer fight, has been flagging. She is glad she learned the truth, but she fears she won’t live long enough to do anything with it. “My son didn’t do this to himself,” Karen said, fighting back tears. “He didn’t have to die … His death killed a part of us.” She turned and studied the clock on the coffee table. Even with all the new information, the clock’s hands remain fixed, unmoving, stuck forever at 35 minutes past midnight."

Fraud. A lie. The Associated Press reports:

"A former Houston police officer has been indicted again on murder charges for his role in a 2019 deadly drug raid that led to the death of a couple and revealed systemic corruption problems within the police department’s narcotics unit. The reindictment by a grand jury on Wednesday of Gerald Goines on two felony murder counts came a week after a judge dismissed two similar murder charges he had previously faced. Goines is charged in the January 2019 deaths of a married couple, Dennis Tuttle, 59, and Rhogena Nicholas, 58. Prosecutors allege Goines had lied to obtain a search warrant by making up a confidential informant and wrongly portraying the couple as dangerous heroin dealers. That led to a deadly encounter in which Tuttle, Nicholas and their dog were fatally shot and police found only small amounts of marijuana and cocaine in the house. Five officers, including Goines, were injured in the raid. Last month, state District Judge Veronica Nelson dismissed the previous two murder indictments that Goines, 59, faced. Goines has maintained his innocence. The ruling came after Goines’ lawyers argued the previous indictments were flawed in how they used the underlying charge of tampering with a government record to indict him for murder."

Law enforcement at its very best? LOL. Sad, isn't it?

"Nicole DeBorde, one of Goines’ attorneys, said she was not surprised by the new indictments. “Without having seen the indictments, we cannot say what motions, if any, will need to be filed to address the new indictments,” DeBorde said Thursday in an email. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said prosecutors were looking forward to presenting their case at trial, which is scheduled for June. Goines is also facing federal charges in connection with the case. “We feel confident that Gerald Goines will be brought to justice and that the victims in this case will finally have their story told,” Ogg told reporters Wednesday. Mike Doyle, an attorney representing Nicholas’ family, said in a statement that his clients, who have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit, “will not stop their fight” for justice. “The Nicholas family has seen so many starts and then stops again in the criminal cases that they can only hope both the District Attorney and U.S. attorney’s offices secure some level of justice, finally,” Doyle said."

"A dozen officers, including Goines, tied to the narcotics squad that carried out the raid were later indicted on various other charges following a corruption probe. Since the raid, prosecutors have reviewed thousands of cases handled by the narcotics unit. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has overturned 22 convictions linked to Goines. One of the other cases tied to Goines that remains under scrutiny is his 2004 drug arrest in Houston of George Floyd, whose 2020 death at the hands of a Minnesota police officer sparked a nationwide reckoning on racism in policing. A Texas board in 2022 declined a request that Floyd be granted a posthumous pardon for his drug conviction following his arrest by Goines."

"As a high-speed chase-turned-standoff unfolded along a Southern California highway in 2022, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy instructed a young female passenger to exit the white 2017 Nissan Frontier and come toward him. The deputies and other law enforcement had caught up to Anthony Graziano, 45, who one day earlier had kidnapped his 15-year-old daughter, Savannah, and fled shortly after being suspected of killing his estranged wife. “Come to me! Come to me! Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk,” the deputy is heard instructing Savannah, according to newly released audio of the encounter. Seconds later, the deputy is heard frantically calling off others. “Hey! Stop!” the deputy is heard saying. “Stop shooting her, he’s in the car! Stop!” It was too late, and Savannah had been fatally shot."

Interestingly:

"Now, the newly released video and audio recordings from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, obtained by public records requests before the agency posted them online, have clarified a long-standing question that had loomed over the fatal incident for the past 18 months — and raised several new ones. The sheriff’s department on Tuesday declined to comment further on the case and referred questions to the California Department of Justice, which is investigating the shooting. The department previously said it would investigate whether the responding deputies followed shooting protocol. The state DOJ declined to discuss the case Tuesday and referred reporters to a 2022 news release announcing the investigation. In the hours that followed the Sept. 27, 2022, shooting in the high desert city of Hesperia, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials, citing preliminary information, had described Savannah as a “participant” and suggested she possibly fired at deputies as they approached her father’s car. The recordings provide a glimpse into how differently the deputies on the ground and in the air viewed the unfolding scene, and how there came to be confusion about Savannah’s role."

Here's what allegedly went down:

"Before the shooting came an Amber Alert for the teenage girl and a highway chase once she was spotted west of Barstow. A gas station attendant called police to report that he had sold two sodas to Savannah and had seen her get into the Graziano’s pickup truck, according to the video. As Graziano sped down a highway, he shot at patrol cars, disabling one, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said during a news conference the day of the incident. At times, Graziano sped more than 113 mph down the highway, according to a deputy on the radio. Well into the chase, a deputy reported on the radio seeing shots fired from the passenger window. Helicopter units reported seeing shots fired from the driver’s side window. A witness who was driving on the highway also reported seeing shots fired from the passenger side. “It must have been someone else because someone was still driving the truck,” the witness said, according to an audio recording released by the sheriff’s department. In the produced video the sheriff’s department put together, the agency noted that this is not confirmation that shots were fired from the passenger side, and said investigators are still looking into whether that happened."

Get this:

"After failing to crest an embankment, Graziano found himself trapped, and a firefight began. As bullets flew, Savannah — wearing a plate vest and a tactical helmet — exited her father’s vehicle. A deputy is heard calling Savannah to come to him, according to audio captured by a belt recording from the deputy who was standing closest to the girl. But as the girl approaches, other deputies begin to fire. The deputy yells that Savannah’s father is still in the vehicle and tells them to stop shooting. “She’s okay! He’s in the car … stop,” the deputy said. He was too late: Savannah was fatally wounded, and was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her father died at the scene. The release of the Graziano shooting footage comes as the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is already facing intense scrutiny from a shooting last month in which deputies killed a 15-year-old boy with autism. Two deputies fatally shot Ryan Gainer at his home after the teen came at a deputy with a gardening hoe. Footage of the encounter was released March 13 and drew anger in the community, as well as rebuke from Gainer’s family."

Not surprising. Certainly, warranted.

“I get it,” DeWitt Lacy, an attorney for the Gainer family, told The Washington Post in March. “It may have been unnerving for an officer, but that doesn’t mean [they] get to shoot a 15-year-old dead.” While there was body-camera footage from the Gainer shooting, San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies did not have the technology in 2022; only aerial video captured from a helicopter exists of the Graziano incident. After several delays, the department rolled out a body-camera program — making it the last sheriff’s departments in the region to do so."

In follow-up to a case covered earlier here and elsewhere, CBS News(AP) reports:

"A former Tacoma police officer who was hired as a sheriff's deputy in a neighboring county — despite his involvement in the violent fatal arrest of Manuel Ellis in 2020 — has resigned his new job after just two days."

Surprised?

"Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders said in a written statement Wednesday that he failed to anticipate the community's strong objections to the hiring of Deputy Christopher Burbank, which Sanders said included death threats to Burbank's family. Burbank resigned effective immediately, Sanders said."

Wake up, Sheriff. The public is tired of this shit. No longer trusts law enforcement. Death threats against this former officer are equally unacceptable and need to be prosecuted. Time for desperately needed change across the board.

"Burbank and two other officers — Timothy Rankine and Matthew Collins — were each cleared of criminal charges by a Pierce County jury last December in the death of Ellis, an unarmed Black man who was shocked, beaten and hog-tied facedown on a sidewalk as he pleaded for breath."

No justice. Sadly, what amounts to legalized murder perpetrated by the jackbooted bastards in blue.

"Rankine was charged with manslaughter, while Collins and Burbank were charged with manslaughter and second-degree murder. Their attorneys argued that Ellis died from a lethal amount of methamphetamine as well as a heart condition, not from the officers' actions. The Pierce County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide and said it was caused by a lack of oxygen during the physical restraint."

No justice.

"The U.S. attorney's office in Seattle is still investigating and could bring prosecutions for federal civil rights violations. A wrongful death lawsuit against Tacoma is pending."

Excellent. Better than nothing.

"When I made the decision to hire Deputy Burbank, I failed to consider the greater community impact and instead made the decision based on business needs to remedy TCSO's staffing crisis," Sanders wrote. "Furthermore, I entirely misjudged community perception on the investigation and jury process that Deputy Burbank completed. I recognize the harm this has caused to marginalized communities, and I was wrong."

No question. Time to resign, Sheriff. The public deserves better.

"Among those who criticized the hiring decision was Matthew Ericksen, an attorney for Ellis' family, who said in an email Tuesday he would be scared if he lived in Thurston County. He noted that video evidence showed Burbank using his Taser on Ellis three times, including while another officer was choking him. On Wednesday, Ericksen said the family was relieved Burbank had resigned. Between the outpouring of criticism over the hiring and the Washington Legislature's decision this year to bar police from hog-tying suspects — a legal change made in response to Ellis' death — the family has more faith that he won't be forgotten, Ericksen said. "It's obvious that the public still remembers Manny and the horrific things that happened to him," Ericksen said. "Manny's death was 100% preventable, and the people of Washington know it."

That's right. Time for law enforcement to finally wake up.

"Like many law enforcement agencies nationwide, the Thurston County Sheriff's Office has struggled with understaffing; the Facebook post announcing the hire noted that Burbank would "provide immediate relief in our patrol division." The sheriff responded to criticism of the hire on Tuesday by saying Burbank had undergone a two-month background check, including a polygraph. Sanders stressed that his office has strived to improve its crisis response by incorporating mental health co-responders, adding that dashboard and body-worn cameras help provide transparency. But by Wednesday it became clear that the hiring wasn't going to work out, and Sanders apologized. "Trust is gained in drops and lost in buckets," he wrote. "For those who have lost confidence in me, or what we're trying to accomplish at TCSO, I apologize for letting you down."

Empty, hollow, meaningless rhetoric, Sheriff. Time to do the right thing. Resign.

"Ellis, 33, was walking home with doughnuts from a 7-Eleven in Tacoma, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Seattle, on March 3, 2020, when he passed a patrol car stopped at a red light, with Collins and Burbank inside. The officers claimed they saw Ellis try to open the door of a passing car at the intersection, and he became aggressive when they tried to question him about it. Collins testified that Ellis demonstrated "superhuman strength" by lifting Collins off the ground and throwing him through the air. But three witnesses testified they saw no such thing. After what appeared to be a brief conversation between Ellis and the officers — who are both white — Burbank, in the passenger seat, threw open his door, knocking Ellis down, they said. Rankine, who arrived after Ellis was already handcuffed face-down, knelt on his upper back. The witnesses — one of whom yelled for the officers to stop attacking Ellis — and a doorbell surveillance camera captured video of parts of the encounter. The video showed Ellis with his hands up in a surrender position as Burbank shot a Taser at his chest and Collins wrapped an arm around his neck from behind. His death came nearly three months before George Floyd's murder at the hands of Minneapolis police would spark an international outcry against police brutality."

Outrageously, gallingly:

"The Tacoma Police Department found that the officers did not violate its use-of-force policy as it was then written — it had been subsequently updated — and the three officers were each paid $500,000 to resign."

"Pierce County, which is home to Tacoma, settled its portion of a federal wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family for $4 million. The case is still pending against the city. The trial was the first under a five-year-old state law designed to make it easier to prosecute police accused of wrongfully using deadly force."

That so?

"Three long-retired Philadelphia police detectives must stand trial, accused of lying under oath at the 2016 retrial of a man the jury exonerated in a 1991 rape and murder. The case, if it proceeds to trial in November, would mark a rare time when police or prosecutors face criminal charges for alleged misconduct that leads to wrongful convictions. Of the nearly 3,500 people exonerated of serious crimes in the U.S. since 1989, more than half of the cases were marred by allegations of flawed work by police or prosecutors, according to a national database. Former detectives Martin Devlin, Manuel Santiago and Frank Jastrzembski, all now in their 70s, hoped a judge would dismiss the case over evidence aired before the grand jury that indicted them. Defense lawyer Brian McMonagle argued Friday that prosecutors tainted the process by letting jurors hear that the detectives had a long history of “committing perjury ... and beating statements out of people.” Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Lucretia Clemons acknowledged mistakes in the grand jury room but said there was enough evidence remaining to send the case to trial. However, she may let the defense appeal the grand jury issue to the state Superior Court before trial."

How can law enforcement, prosecutors, and/or the judiciary be trusted? No credibility.

"An unusual confluence of factors allowed District Attorney Larry Krasner to charge the detectives in the case of exoneree Anthony Wright, who was convicted in 1993 of an elderly widow’s rape and murder two years earlier. Wright was arrested at age 20. He spent two decades in prison before DNA testing seemingly cleared him of the crime. Despite the DNA exclusion, Krasner’s predecessor chose to retry him, calling the detectives out of retirement to testify. The five-year window to file perjury charges for trial testimony began anew. The key piece of evidence remaining at the retrial was Wright’s confession. His lawyers argued that it was coerced. The detectives denied it. Lawyer Sam Silver, representing Wright, asked Devlin to write down the nine-page confession in real time, as he said he had done “word for word” in 1991. The once-famed detective — who helped nab a New Jersey rabbi in his wife’s murder-for-hire — jotted down only six words before giving up. Wright told jurors that police had made him sign the confession without reading it. They deliberated just a few minutes before acquitting him, and Wright, who spent 25 years in prison, later received a nearly $10 million settlement from the city."

Get this:

“That case was remarkable. There was a DNA exclusion, and they said they were going to try it anyway,” said Maurice Possley, a senior researcher at The National Registry of Exonerations. Santiago and Devlin are accused of lying about the confession. Santiago and Jastrzembski are accused of lying when they testified that they didn’t know about the DNA problem. Jastrzembski is accused of lying about finding the victim’s clothes in Wright’s bedroom. All three maintain their innocence, and about a dozen aging friends — including some of the more illustrious detectives of their era in the Philadelphia Police Department — were in court to support them Friday."

Fascinating, isn't it? Inexplicable as well. Truth certainly remains a moving target. Sad, isn't it?

"Krasner has championed 47 exonerations to date, while pursuing a small number of police perjury cases. He charged the Wright detectives in 2021, days before the five-year deadline expired. The registry’s work shows that public agencies across the U.S. have spent more than $4 billion to compensate people for the nine years, on average, they wrongly spent in prison."

Needless to say, far more on this case as it becomes available.

In follow-up to an egregious case covered repeatedly here and elsewhere, NPR reports:

"Police shot Nakala Murry's young son. Now, she could lose custody of her kids. A Mississippi mom could lose custody of her three children nearly a year after a police officer shot and wounded her 11-year-old son in their home. In a new court filing obtained by NPR, Sunflower County, Miss., officials reference the May 2023 police shooting of 11-year-old Aderrien Murry and accuse his mother, Nakala Murry, of neglecting her three children — including Aderrien, — during the domestic incident. Aderrien had called 911 for help. He was seriously injured after Sgt. Greg Capers of the Indianola, Miss., Police Department shot him in the chest. The court filing argues that an unnamed witness saw Nakala Murry's ex-boyfriend, John Nolden, jump on her during the May 2023 incident in front of her three children. The filing also indicated the unnamed witness said Aderrien Murry's shooting was a "result of the mother and boyfriend domestic violence that [has] been happening for years."

Lack of transparency speaks volumes. No identification of a witness. Outrageous.

"Nakala Murry spoke exclusively to NPR on Friday following the court-filed petition, saying that it "caught her off guard." "As I read what [the petition] said, I was taken aback," Nakala Murry said. "I feel disgusted." Carlos Moore, the attorney representing the Murry family, told NPR that the court-filed petition is "outlandish" and suggests the move by the court is retaliation for her ongoing lawsuit against the City of Indianola over her son's shooting."

Certainly, appears to be the case.

"I believe they are just harassing her," Moore said. "She is a single mother and she does not deserve this pure harassment."

"Gwendolyn Jimison, the Sunflower County prosecuting attorney who filed the petition, did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment."

"Nakala Murry is expected to report to the Sunflower County Youth Court on April 17, where she will defend her right for sole custody of her three children. This latest move from the Sunflower County Youth Court comes months after a grand jury in Mississippi determined that there was no criminal conduct on behalf of Capers, who shot Aderrien. Mississippi State Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced in December 2023 that her office would take no further action against Capers and no charges would be filed against him. "As such, no further criminal action will be taken by this Office in this matter," Fitch said at the time."

"On May 20, 2023, Nakala Murry said she told 11-year-old Aderrien Murry to call the police after the father of one of her other children, later identified as John Nolden, came to their home in the early morning in an "irate" mood. After arriving at the Murry family home, police instructed everyone inside to come out with their hands up. Nakala Murry says that's when Aderrien emerged from around a corner, running toward the door. Capers then opened fire. Aderrien Murry suffered a collapsed lung, fractured rib and lacerated liver. The Murry family filed a $5 million federal lawsuit in May 2023, which argues that the police officers who responded to the domestic disturbance call acted in a way that was "so outrageous that it shocks the moral and legal conscience of the community." Moore said the lawsuit filed against the City of Indianola and its police department continues to go forward, as he and the Murry family await key orders from the judge assigned to the case."

Sadly, the Israelis have lost themselves. NPR reports:

"Here's what we found after Israel's raid on Al-Shifa, Gaza's biggest hospital. For two weeks beginning in March, Israeli commandos besieged what was once the Gaza Strip's biggest and most advanced medical complex, Al-Shifa. Israel's military said the target was militants who'd regrouped there, using its premises for shelter and internet access. It said Hamas hid behind the sick and injured, and insisted no civilians were killed in the raid. Israeli statements described it as a precise operation — a model for future military action in Gaza. Early on Monday, April 1, Israeli troops withdrew under the cover of darkness, ending the siege. That's when Palestinians caught the first glimpses of its aftermath. Photos and survivors' testimony gathered by NPR in Gaza City reveal a battle that destroyed nearly every corner of Al-Shifa, as well as the neighborhoods and homes around it — now heaps of twisted metal, debris and ashes from fires that were set alight. Bodies lay decomposing in the hospital's dirt courtyard, which was laden with unexploded ordnance. Other people were shot and left to die in its hallways, maimed and crushed by tanks outside its gates, decomposing on side streets and in buildings. As yet, there's no clear death toll and no clarity on how many of those killed may be civilians or suspected fighters. One woman's screams pierced through the courtyard as bodies were freshly uncovered on Monday. "It's enough, already! Enough, oh God!" she wailed."

Wake up.

"Before and after satellite images by Maxar Technologies show the devastation at Al-Shifa and the streets around it from the war. On two separate visits to Al-Shifa during the raid, Israel's military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, praised the troops and the operation, saying part of its aim was to put pressure on negotiations with Hamas for a temporary ceasefire. Israel said its forces uncovered many weapons inside the hospital during the raid, and killed and arrested hundreds of militants. "We went in there with a surgical force, special operations and we took out over 200 terrorists. We apprehended over 900 terrorists with not a single civilian casualty," Israeli government spokesman Avi Hyman said. He added that the raid will be studied at top military academies like West Point in the U.S. and Sandhurst in the U.K. as the "gold standard for urban warfare."

Palestinian civilians have a totally different take on what went down:

"The acting chairman of Al-Shifa Hospital, Dr. Marwan Abu Saada, said three of his colleagues were killed during the siege, though he didn't provide details on the circumstances. Speaking to reporters outside the destroyed medical complex in the hospital courtyard alongside other Palestinian doctors in white coats, hours after Israeli troops had ended their siege, Abu Saada said those killed included the chief engineer of the maintenance department, the head of pharmaceuticals and a reconstructive surgeon killed with his mother. He and other hospital staff buried them all on Monday, he said. He also named seven doctors detained by Israeli forces during the raid or still held from a previous raid in November, among them several intensive care doctors and general surgeons. The World Health Organization says 21 patients died in the hospital during Israel's recent 14-day siege, and that more than 100 patients were trapped without enough food or water in squalid conditions. Severely injured children endured the raid alone, without their parents or caretakers, according to the WHO."

Think they're lying?

"Emaciated-looking patients were carried out on stretchers after the raid ended and transported to other smaller, partially functioning hospitals in northern Gaza. Emad Jibreel, one of the patients besieged inside Al-Shifa, told NPR they were forced to move to different rooms in the hospital by Israeli forces, and kept in rooms with no windows or ventilation at times. "I spent about eight days without changing the dressing on my leg," Jibreel said. "It became infected twice. And the doctors and nurses couldn't care for us because they said they didn't have gloves or gauze." The raid not only focused on the hospital, but also its surrounding streets, where fierce battles took place. Photos taken by NPR show entire buildings turned to rubble. In the early hours of March 18, as Israeli forces swept into Al-Shifa with heavy gunfire and tanks, residents nearby said other Israeli troops went pounding door to door, throwing stun grenades into homes as they rounded up people for interrogation."

Think that's a lie?

"Nariman Qanita tells NPR she was startled awake by the sound of heavy gunfire and shelling a few hours after evening Ramadan prayers had ended. She said Israeli forces entered the her apartment building as if they were battling militants, not entering the homes of families with children. "When they raided and came into the building, there were kids sleeping in their room — kids 12 and 13 years old. They cried out, baba, baba (Daddy, Daddy)," she said. "We saw one bleeding out, wounded in his organs, not from bullets. He had a hole no smaller than 20 centimeters [8 inches] in him." It's unclear how the boy was wounded. Israeli forces used stun grenades when pounding down doors, and employed artillery, airstrikes and heavy gunfire throughout their operation, according to residents. She said the boy bled for hours until Israeli forces allowed him out of the building, but not, she says, before the boy's mother had to watch him bleeding heavily for some time. Qanita doesn't know if he survived. Hours later, Israeli troops ordered the women and children to follow a strict evacuation route. They weren't allowed to take anything with them, not their phones or IDs, she said. The men were stripped down to their underwear. Other Palestinians told NPR similar stories. Qanita returned home when the siege ended. It was turned to rubble. "There are no suitable homes to live in. Where do we go, people?" she said. "While you're preparing your Eid clothes and Eid cookies, we're preparing shrouds and how to retrieve the dead from under our homes. It's enough already," she said, describing the festive Muslim holiday after Ramadan that's nearing."

Think all this is a lie?

"Journalist Bayan Abusultan lives near Al-Shifa Hospital. She posted a reel on Instagram showing some of the moments she survived during the raid, including prayers over the body of her brother and another person wrapped in white shrouds. She doesn't say how he died, just that he was killed by Israeli forces. In another scene, she shows people she describes as her neighbors wounded and bleeding with nowhere to go for treatment. She also shows a fire in an apartment in the building next to hers. Numerous homes in western Gaza City burned during the raid. NPR could not immediately reach Abusultan for more details on what she lived through and the circumstances of her brother's death."

Think all this is a lie?

"This raid was the second major assault on Al-Shifa since the start of the war nearly six months ago, and proved to be its most decisive. "The Al-Shifa Medical Complex is out of service forever," Abu Saada, its acting chairman, told reporters. He said the hospital once had capacity for almost 800 beds. More than a quarter-million people were rushed through its emergency rooms a year. The hospital used to perform more than 17,000 surgeries annually. It was a beacon in Gaza, he said, a place where bright medical students would train, where visiting doctors would perform surgery and assist in past conflicts and where journalists would flock to report on the casualties and human toll of wars with Israel. The hospital cannot receive patients anymore, said Abu Saada. There's nowhere to perform surgeries, lab tests or dialysis, he said, because everything was destroyed or burned down. He called for the establishment of an immediate field hospital in Gaza City. Out of 36 hospitals across the Gaza Strip, only about a dozen are partially functioning due to the war and Israeli raids. Those hospitals lack enough supplies like basic anesthesia, bed space and equipment. The World Health Organization this week said its multiple requests to Israeli authorities to facilitate a visit to Al-Shifa to speak with staff and see what can be saved in the wake of the raid have so far been denied or impeded."

"The IDF is supposed to protect aid workers. Aid agencies say the Israeli military has been attacking them for months. “This pattern of attacks is either intentional or indicative of reckless incompetence,” top Doctors Without Borders official Christopher Lockyear said. The killing of seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen may mark a turning point in support for Israel and for long frustrated efforts to bring relief to Palestinians on the brink of starvation. But while the Israel Defense Forces investigation suggests this was an isolated “grave mistake,” the mounting toll faced by aid agencies throughout the war points instead to what they say are systemic failings in the IDF’s approach to protecting humanitarian workers in the Gaza Strip. The effort to expose Wells Fargo egregious deceptive trade practices continues. Several years ago to determinedly apply renewed pressure on our truly worthless, egregiously self-serving Texas Attorney General, now Governor, an excoriating email was sent to the bastard. Copies of which were also passed on to both offending Wells Fargo officers. A copy was also sent to the Davis campaign and others at the time.

Voters did have a right to know as Attorney General, the GOP candidate for Governor apparently selectively investigated, or not, bona fide complaints filed by citizens against banks too big to fail. Possibly, Wells Fargo could have lined his pockets in some fashion. That has yet to be determined.

The bastard and his office, no matter what, failed to respond to the complaint originally snail mailed several years ago. This material, figuratively targeting Wells Fargo and the governor 'wannabe' now Governor, had been posted and can be found by scrolling all the way down and clicking on the links well below. ... Governor? Wells Fargo bribe you to look the other way?

Will continue to do all I can to publicly expose this to all, both in this publication and elsewhere. She has, indeed, been promoted branch manager. Reverse Darwinism. Survival of the unfittest.

This young woman has indeed been rewarded by the Wells Fargo corporate management suite for engaging in criminal deceptive trade practices and her undying loyalty to her corporate masters. The name of this publication was changed some fifteen years ago from The Llano Ledger to Liberty In Peril. The reason? Simple. Cowardly failure of this community to stand up to tyranny that has only exponentially worsened the last decade and a half. Clearly, demonstrated as well by the cowardly failure of businesses to financially support this publication. Either through advertising or other financial support. Too afraid doing so would enrage the bastards who run and own this hellhole County.

-- Despite the fact these businesses were, and are, being egregiously f--ked by these very same bastards. Tough, isn't it? Impossible to entertain any sympathy for cowardice, however. Especially in view of the fact this writer has placed himself in great jeopardy taking on these corrupt, abusive, inept criminal bastards. Alone.

Exactly, why you see no investigative material highly critical of these sons of bitches in other local rags. Sadly, cowardly, all advertising income immediately dries up. Consequently, the bastards continue their criminal chicanery with impunity. On a rampage. Thus, you get what you truly deserve. Always. Precisely, why this earlier name change to Liberty In Peril remains appropriate. -- Despite the fact this writer has not yet left the area. Ten years after originally intending to do so. Thirty years in this goddamned godforsaken hellhole.

This writer, then and now, remains primarily interested in state, federal, and international issues. Another reason for this publication name change. Despite the fact I stupidly cluelessly remain here, local issues must be addressed. Can't be ignored. That's where you come in dear readers. Have the courage to inform this writer of local abuse, corruption, ineptness you are aware of, have personally experienced.

... Information these criminal bastards do all they can to conceal, cover up. Otherwise, how can they effectively sustain the charade and intended result? Loot confiscation through a boot heel on the throat of the citizenry.

The only way, short of an unwanted dreaded second American revolution, to force badly-needed change is to expose all this to the light of day. These bastards are beginning to understand they have a problem. No question, the growing rage of those they've abused, looted, egregiously f--ked. It's time to stand up. For a measly salary, no job security, reduced to no benefits. At a time of record corporate profits and cash reserves.

Then, you gallingly complain about the oppression as you tolerate egregious theft of your labor. Not only by your corporate masters, but their bought and paid for government lackeys. Too cowardly to stand up, allow disclosure of your identity when you rightfully complain to this publication of being mercilessly f--ked. Some of you falsely arrested, criminally assaulted, bogusly fined for 'offenses' you did not commit. To line County coffers. Keep the peasants in line and under control. A fascist police-state. Nazi America.

Again, yet another reason why this publication is called Liberty In Peril. Most galling? Nothing changes if you fail to step up and challenge corrupt, abusive, inept authority. Too afraid, cowardly compliant to let the bastards know who you are. Did it ever occur to the cowards out there if the identity of the accuser is kept under wraps the bastards will falsely claim it's all made up by this publication? Thus, conveniently killing all credibility. Wake up.

Cowardice is unbecoming, unworthy of our formerly great country. Insult to injury? There are the hopelessly deranged who believe the chicanery reported here to be manufactured anyway. No matter the effort. No matter the research. No matter the proof. Wake up. This writer cannot do it alone. Snowball's chance in hell. Then again, cowardice, delusion is always amply, justly rewarded. Always. You continue to 'enjoy' the very best government money can buy. Literally.
