Catastrophe Worsening In Iraq November 26, 2006
Without question, it is increasingly painful writing about the debacle in Iraq and exponential loss of life. This week hundreds of innocent Iraqis were killed. The country appears to be in full-blown civil war. Yet, the "President" of the United States remains clueless, lamely "staying the course." Why?
Mr. Bush has no "acceptable" options. Should he withdraw, he'd be forced to admit the invasion was indeed a mistake, -- intentionally launched under false pretenses. Should he remain, however, the carnage continues and his party will again be held accountable two years from now during the presidential election. Our "Commander In Chief" is sorely caught between a rock and a hard place.
So, the "President" remains paralyzed, incapable of making decisions critical to the future of thousands of American troops and millions of Iraqis. Clearly, Mr. Bush is a failure. His "Presidency" is a failure. His "Administration" and all the henchmen that work for it remain clueless.
Mr. Bush went to war in Iraq under false pretenses. No weapons of mass destruction were found. Apparently, he and his henchmen pressured "intelligence" agencies to provide "evidence" supportive of the invasion. That is, convenient, manufactured "proof" of their supposed existence. ... Despite assertions to the contrary of that supposed existence by weapons inspectors in Iraq prior to the war. -- Inspectors that were cleverly and conveniently prevented from completing their mission.
Mr. Bush, "Slick Dick" Cheney, Rumsfeld, and others thought American troops would be welcomed as "liberators," showered with flowers and chocolates. Instead, they cruelly faced IEDs and snipers. Approximately, 3,000 have been killed. Another 23,000 maimed. Tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis killed, -- at the very least. Thousands and thousands of others maimed.
The "President" must be held accountable. The Democratically-controlled Congress should quickly investigate and conduct public hearings soon after it assumes power in January. Should Mr. Bush not agree to prompt orderly troop withdrawal, all funding must be cut off.
The war was a mistake. As Americans, we should be big enough to admit this fact. Such an admission and an apology would indeed go a long way to restoring the tattered image of the United States. ... And the loss of trust. Indeed, a worldwide loss.
To the point, as barbaric and brutal as Saddam was, the situation in Iraq is currently far worse than during his bloody regime. ... Our hopelessly deluded "President" perversely believed he could play God in Iraq. Arrogantly dictate to Iraqis American values and beliefs. Sadly, not to be.
Iraqis don't think as Americans. Their values, beliefs, philosophy, etc. are radically different. Consequently, American nation-building in Iraq is an abject failure. Withdrawal only a matter of time. How many more of our best and brightest will be killed and maimed before we finally wake up?
Today, the war is 1,347 days old, sadly, the length of the Second World War. Yet, there is no end in sight. The debacle in Vietnam lasted approximately nine years. Would have gone on even longer had Congress not cut off funding. Again, how many more of our best and brightest will be needlessly sacrificed before we change course?
The debacle in Iraq raises a far more important long-term issue, however. With exception of the initial attack on Afghanistan shortly after 9/11, our formerly great country has not fought a "just" war since the end of the Second World War in 1945. Systemic nation-wide paranoia generated by the supposedly unanticipated "sneak attack" on Pearl Harbor has indeed led to unjustified war after war, decade after decade.
Consequently, U.S. presidents have been all too willing to overreact and go to war under false pretenses for non-legitimate reasons. Worse, war greatly benefits business. Precisely, why presidents and law makers are so willing to look the other way, yield to temptation, and do what's best for the corporate bottom line. ... At the expense of the people, particularly the young.
This has to change. Eventually, our young will again wake up as did an earlier generation during Vietnam. At some point, however, the reaction may be far worse than protest. What happens when a threat on the scale of the Second World War arises and no one believes it? No one is willing to fight?
While the "War On Terror" is nowhere near the threat level posed by Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany, what if this changes? ... Sadly, a distinct possibility since the "President" has indeed foolishly created a terrorist haven in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Occupying forces, no more than sitting ducks, are clearly no answer to the "War On Terror." Guerilla tactics must be used. Obtain good intelligence. Hit and run. Go on to fight another day. Regardless, the solution to the problem is not military. ... At least not at this time.
It
is not too late for
this problem to be ultimately solved politically through policy change.
--
Yes, there would always be
terrorist diehards that would have to be rooted out militarily, killed
or captured. But, the Bush
"Administration" could quickly
take the wind out of al Qaeda's sails by changing
policies dating
back decades.
We created this terrorist monster. How? First, the United States has never been an even-handed broker in the Middle East vis a vis the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Always, one-sided. -- Israel can do no wrong.
Second, we seemingly permanently garrison American troops in Moslem countries, highly offensive to mainstream Islam, -- to say nothing of the radical element.
Third, we embrace the outrageously corrupt and abusive House of Saud in Saudia Arabia. This enflames the Moslem world. Our insensitivity to the injustice is aggressively stupid, -- and a contributing factor to the rise of terrorism. Yet, we inexplicably refuse to see.
Fourth, we foolishly resist becoming energy independent and continue to insatiably import Arab crude. This enriches the rulers at the expense of their people. Worse, it finances terrorists. Again, aggressively stupid and not in our best interests.
Should American policy change, the wind would be quickly taken out of the sails of the extremists. They would lose support of mainstream Moslems. -- People who want to work, raise families, practice their religion, and enjoy life just as most of us do. Peaceably.
The
window for change is quickly
closing. It is time for the leadership of our formerly great
country
to finally wake up. If not, expect the "War On Terror" to go
on indefinitely
and ultimately be lost.
