Congressional Melt-Down November 19, 2005
This has not been a good week for the U.S. Congress. Both House and Senate business has been conducted in a poisonous atmosphere that reached new lows of civility the last several days. The House passed a bill that would hit the poorest of the poor to the tune of $50 billion. Not to be outdone, the Senate voted for tax cuts that would benefit the richest of the rich.
Worse, the House suffered a melt-down regarding withdrawal of troops from Iraq. While the Senate politely pressured the "President" to come up with a plan for troop withdrawal some time in the foreseeable future, Republicans in the House forced an immediate withdrawal resolution they knew would quickly fail, embarrassing Democrats.
Name-calling ran rampant and the public saw the very worst Congress has to offer. Time to boot all House and Senate members from office. Every damned one of them. All bought and paid for by corporate lobbyists. They don't do the people's business. They conduct their own. None are accountable. Not one.
The saddest episode of all in the House was the derision accorded Democrat Rep. John Murtha. Murtha is a strong supporter of the military and Pentagon. -- A 37-year career soldier, retired Marine colonel, highly decorated and wounded in Vietnam. Voted for the Iraq invasion and strongly supported the "President," -- until several days ago.
Finally found his voice, however, and courageously urged all troops be immediately withdrawn from Iraq within six months. This ignited a firestorm in the House that quickly got out of hand. Was even labeled a coward by Republican Congresswoman Jean Schmidt from Ohio: "Cowards cut and run, Marines never do." Not surprisingly, the gentle "lady" from the Great State of Ohio was quickly forced to retract her remarks from the congressional record by outraged members of both parties.
Sadly, however, Murtha did not rise to the occasion when Republicans forced a contrived vote on immediate withdrawal, designed to embarrass Democrats. He was not one of only three Democrats indeed courageous enough to vote for the measure, -- despite the fact he had earlier called for immediate withdrawal on the House floor.
Congressional good news this week? Only one item. Seems a bi-partisan group is desperately trying to block USA "Patriot" Act renewal. ... Who'd a' 'thunk' it? Political moderates from both parties apparently understand the outrageously pernicious unconstitutional nature of this exceptionally fascist law, cleverly designed to eviscerate the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments. -- A law that's been championed by the Nazi occupying the White House and his henchmen.
Politics is increasingly crass, hopelessly irrelevant, and determinedly indifferent to the best interests and wishes of the citizenry. The "President" and other politicians disingenuously and falsely crow they do not govern by poll. Simply untrue, however, in a democratic republic, representative democracy. ... If they don't adhere to the long-term best interests and wishes of the people, they quickly get the boot from office. Despite the fact we live in what appears to be fascist police state, our government is not yet a dictatorship. At least, should not be. Precisely, why a revolution may indeed become unavoidable.
Austin Police Chief Stan Knee indefinitely suspended, i.e. fired, Officer Julie Schroeder for violation of use of force policy, violation of Taser policy, and violation of in-car video policy in the Rocha killing back in June. Rocha was shot in the back as described in an earlier June edition of this publication.
Schroeder was no-billed in the killing by the Travis County Grand Jury, sparking an intense public reaction. There is a pressing state-wide need for a special prosecutor and grand jury dedicated solely to police abuse and corruption cases. Historically, District Attorneys have proven incapable and unwilling to prosecute corrupt and abusive officers within their jurisdiction, -- since they must work with these very same police agencies on a daily basis.
Schroeder did not have the support of the police monitor and citizens review panel. ... Nor should she have, considering the circumstances and video-tape of the re-enactment of the shooting. Officer Mike Sheffield, president of the police union, condemned the panel as a "kangaroo court" and vowed to work for removal of the Chief. -- A Chief considered to be gutless by his officers and incapable of standing up for them.
Self-serving police union aside, it is time officers be held accountable for corrupt and abusive behavior. They should, at the very least, be held to the same standard as ordinary citizens. If not a higher one. Since they are "protected" by laws making killing of an officer a capital offense, the same standard should also be applied to them. If they wantonly kill, that is deliberately murder an innocent civilian, they should be executed for the crime.
... Would certainly make corrupt and abusive officers think twice before pulling the trigger. Usefully, cut down on the "cowboy" behavior exhibited by too many officers. Should be no threat to good officers, however, who may justifiably have to kill during performance of their duties. Let a jury decide the officer's intentions and performance. If officers are unwilling to be held to such standards, they should not be officers. After all, not everyone is cut out for law enforcement.
Would
certainly cut down on the
glut of officers nationwide, since many would be afraid to
stay.
Sadly, we're over-policed anyway. Fewer officers, but far
better
trained and motivated, would indeed be a plus. No officer
should
be paid less than $100,000 annually in salary. Law
enforcement jobs
are, and should be, considered professional and paid
accordingly.
Most important of all, corrupt and abusive officers must be permanently
booted out of the profession.
Overseas again to escape growing political pressure and unrest at home, "President" Bush laughably lectured the Chinese on the value of liberty and democracy. Imagine that. The unabashed hypocritical fascist, currently occupying the White House, is in no position to lecture anyone on the principles of liberty, civil and constitutional rights and liberties, human rights, or any other value previously treasured in our formerly great country.
After all, Mr. Bush and his henchmen have authorized CIA-established prisons overseas, where vanished "detainees" suddenly wind up to be reportedly tortured and abused. Some have been allegedly killed. Others have been "rendered" to a number of foreign governments to be tortured and abused by their "intelligence" goons.
In addition, the "President" has intentionally eviscerated the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments by signing outrageously unconstitutional legislation such as the USA "Patriot" Act, Homeland "Security" Act, "Real" ID Act, etc., and other equally unconstitutional Executive Orders. -- To say nothing of outrageously unconstitutional "National Security Letters" used as "Writs of Assistance" to obtain highly personal information without a warrant. Information, such as medical records, banking records, employment records, etc..
... Then, he has the unmitigated gall to lecture the Chinese? Hypocritically dictate to others the value of rights already eviscerated here? While China indeed has a long, long way to go, what about here, Mr. "President?" What about here?
Nazism
is no less repressive than
communism, Mr. "President." Then again, in the world of the
Right
Wing fascist, day is night, night is day, and manure smells perversely
sweet. In Nazi America.
Frenzied
Republican senators forced
a resolution through the Senate demanding the "President" define and
provide
his "winning strategy" Iraq policy to Congress, updating it every 90
days.
...
So troops might eventually
be withdrawn at some undefined point in the future.
There is no timetable, however, so the resolution has absolutely no teeth. -- "Symbolism over substance," to borrow a quote from an exceptionally popular, fascist radio talk show host.
GOP senators are growing increasingly restless, as poll numbers plummet. A few are beginning to consider clipping the "President's" virtually unlimited war-making powers, generously granted in a blank check by both parties before the Iraq invasion. Interesting, isn't it?
Hopefully, -- if Democrats finally find some backbone, there may indeed be a debate on CIA-established prisons overseas, where kidnapped "detainees" are reportedly tortured and abused. Some allegedly killed.
Senators in both parties are particularly chagrined, since they had not been informed of their existence by the "President" until recently disclosed by The Washington Post. Democrats are reportedly dawdling due to fears they may be falsely accused of jeopardizing "national 'security'" by Republicans.
Gutless
Democrats have also remained
deafeningly silent on the policy of "rendition," used by
"Administration"
goons to abduct suspected terrorists to Third World countries to be
tortured
and abused by their "interrogators." Silent as well on the
"Administration's"
use of white phosphorous on enemy combatants. Considered by
many
to be a chemical weapon. -- Burns flesh and muscle to the
bone.
In a 1985 job application recently released by the Reagan Presidential Library, Supreme Court nominee "Judge" Samuel Alito clearly stated he does not believe a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion. Despite this fact, the Fascist Right conveniently and disingenuously claims and believes he has no agenda, no ideology to be imposed as a Supreme Court "justice." Is that right?
... The Nazi element in our formerly great country also apparently has a bridge for sale in Brooklyn. At a meeting with Senate Judiciary Committee member Sen. Diane Feinstein, Alito brushed aside concern, claiming the job was a political one, years ago. -- A "relief," isn't it? Unlike Chief "Justice" Roberts, however, Alito has not, to date, claimed Roe v. Wade to be settled law.
... Cleverly, leaving open the door to later imposition of his perverse ideology and religious views from the bench at the Supreme Court. As repeatedly stated on this website, there is no such thing as a truly impartial judge. Every damned one of them, whether Right, Left, or Center, brings their biases to the bench. While most of them make a concerted effort to appear impartial, some don't, -- like Scalia, Thomas, and the late William Rehnquist.
Disturbingly,
Alito has no regard
for civil liberties and constitutional rights. ... This
outrageous
fascist went so far as to sanction a strip-search of a ten-year-old
girl
by police who had no probable cause. -- Seems there ought to
be an
investigation of the sexual proclivities not only of the police
involved,
but the dear "judge" as well.
