Sen. Hutchison "Chokes" On Meet The Press October 23, 2005
Clearly flustered and out of touch, Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison did not immediately respond to Tim Russet's first question on Meet the Press. -- These are not good times for Republicans. With former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay already indicted and others in the White House possibly experiencing the same fate later this week, GOP stalwarts are indeed under extreme pressure.
Incredibly, Hutchison does not believe the "President's" closest cronies should be indicted on lesser charges of perjury, lying to federal officials, or obstruction of justice. In the Senator's view, such lesser charges would only contribute to the "gotcha" politics currently in vogue.
Is that right, Kay? Where was your outrage when Clinton was impeached for lying under oath about having oral sex with a young intern? ... A question that was nobody's goddamned business other than Hillary's.
The Senator conveniently believes perjury to be a "technicality," -- ostensibly to ameliorate criticism should there be indictments of "Administration" insiders. Hutchison, also conveniently, has ignored the fact perjury and obstruction of justice are instruments commonly used by criminals to avoid indictment on the original charge or charges.
The Senator, also conveniently, has apparently forgotten she voted to convict Clinton on House impeachment charges, -- one of which included perjury. ... Lying under oath about oral sex with an intern as discussed above. Hypocritical, isn't it? Self-serving as well.
Sadly, the Senator is particularly "sensitized" about pending indictments, -- since she herself already went a round or two with Travis District Attorney Ronnie Earle years ago. ... She successfully got off the hook on a "technicality," however, courtesy of an exceptionally sympathetic "judge," -- when Earle was not ready to proceed. "Judicial" "impartiality" at its very best, no?
Returning to the Meet the Press fiasco and amusingly, Virginia Republican Sen. George Allen faired no better at the hands of Russet. Sadly, the Senator continued to massage and distort unpleasant reality in Iraq, disingenuously extolling supposed progress there. ... Nothing quite like towing the party line, no? -- Even when the ship is obviously sinking.
Democratic Sen. Charles "Sweet Chucky" Schumer again disgraced himself and refused to admit he had indeed made a mistake in voting to give the "President" a blank check to prosecute the Iraq war. In fact, the jackass, by his own account, would repeat the mistake under similar circumstances. -- Nothing quite like aggressive stupidity, no?
No
question, neither political
party is worth a crap. Both lie, cheat, distort reality, and
line
their pockets. Corporations and their lobbyists run and own
Congress.
Everything in our formerly great country is ass backwards.
Day is
night, night is day, and manure smells perversely sweet. ...
If a
politician tells you it's twelve noon, better look up and verify the
sun
is indeed high in the sky.
A videotape, originally shown on Australian television, depicts two Taliban bodies allegedly burned and desecrated by American troops. U.S. forces then reportedly used a bullhorn to taunt and inform Taliban fighters the bodies were facing west, i.e. Mecca. -- In an effort to provoke the enemy to come out and fight.
Not surprisingly, the tape has generated a firestorm. Two investigations have already begun. Sadly, at the very least, this fiasco will exponentially increase determination of the enemy to kill Americans.
Worse, it further illustrates the profound depth of indifference to the conventions of war by the Bush "Administration." Despite false assertions to the contrary by Bush's henchmen.
Sadly, the "President" believes the Geneva Conventions to be "quaint" as clearly articulated by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay, and continuing "renditions" to Third World countries for torture remain stunning evidence.
Such ongoing abuses of power by this fascist "Administration" only further endanger our troops in this conflict and future ones. Our enemies, both present and future, will conveniently use these abrogations to justify the same abuse or worse to captured American troops.
Our formerly great country used to hold itself to a much higher standard. Clearly, no longer. The ends now justify the means, -- no matter the long-term cost.
The enemy is clearly frustrating U.S. forces. Sadly, but wisely in its best interests, not ours, it uses unconventional, brutal tactics to kill Americans and others. From its viewpoint, not ours, it has no choice.
To fight openly by our rules would mean it would be immediately destroyed by our overwhelming force. To do so, on their part, would indeed be stupid.
This is not, however, to justify the enemy or its tactics, but to illustrate there is in fact another viewpoint alien to ours.
If
we do not understand this viewpoint
and mentality, no matter how perverse and destructive, we will not
defeat the enemy.
Sadly, 28% of returning U.S. troops from Iraq are suffering from medical and psychiatric problems. These men and women are not being properly treated by the Veterans Administration. Apparently, the root cause of much, if not most, of these problems is continued use of depleted uranium.
-- A problem dating back to Gulf War I and Gulf War Syndrome, ignored and dismissed by the U.S. government. Tragically, our troops are paying the price, as they did with Agent Orange decades earlier in Vietnam.
Yet,
nothing ever changes.
Promises to our troops continue to be broken. One of these
days and
ominously, our formerly great country will indeed face a legitimate,
immediate
threat and no one will believe it, and worse, few will be willing to go.
Defiant as ever, Saddam went on trial earlier today. -- Refused to identify himself, and continuously challenged authority of the court. ... A court made up of five judges. The chief judge had the guts to remove his mask. Still, however, his identity is unclear. Interesting, isn't it? The trial was quickly recessed when witnesses cowardly did not show up, fearing retribution.
No question, the former Iraqi dictator is a monster who should be tried for crimes against humanity. Under circumstances of continuing occupation patently offensive to most of the world community, convenient installation of a government sympathetic to U.S. interests, and resultant creation of a training ground sadly useful to terrorists, though, should he be tried in Iraq?
Although no fan of international tribunals, why isn't he tried in a more appropriate international venue such as the World Court to provide some small measure of legitimacy to an increasingly skeptical world? Do we really think we can go it alone? Arrogantly, ignore the thinking of other nations?
Create Fortress America and believe we can indeed survive without support and cooperation of the world community? U.S. debt to China, Japan, and elsewhere screams otherwise. So does foreign trade and outsourcing of blue and white collar jobs overseas.
Insatiably greedy Corporate America deliberately created this dependence to line its pockets. In a few decades, consequently, few in our formerly great country will know how to design, engineer, manufacture, etc.. We'll indeed be at the mercy of the world community. Yet, the Fascist Right ignorantly dismisses and excuses all travesties of the business community.
A trial in Iraq smacks of kangaroo justice. Why? First, the United States invaded and occupied a sovereign nation under false pretenses.
Second, it quickly installed a puppet government supported, protected, and propped up by ongoing occupation, -- a puppet government that remains beholden to us despite two elections since January.
Third, what legitimate court allows its judges to be masked and unidentified?
Fourth, the United States did not, and does not, enjoy support of the world community for its unprovoked attack and invasion of Iraq. Consequently, many will never accept any actions of the U.S. backed court as legitimate.
There
is the strong possibility
Saddam will not receive a fair trial. How can he in a country
that
is still controlled by U.S. authorities despite strong denials by a
lying
U.S. "Administration?"
...
An "Administration" that
has continuously massaged the truth, distorted reality, and repeatedly
lied to its population regarding progress of the war.
Other nations are not stupid. Much to the chagrin of ole' George "The Tush" and his henchmen, they do know the score. They know when they're being BS'ed and manipulated. A conviction and execution courtesy of a kangaroo Iraqi court, beholden to the U.S., will not sit well in the world community and have ongoing repercussions unfavorable to our long-term interests.
--
Despite the fact the corrupt
and abusive bastard indeed deserves whatever he gets. ...
Just do
it right. Do it legitimately. Do it
openly. Transparently.
With due process. Although strongly opposed to capital
punishment,
no tear would indeed be shed for the Butcher of Baghdad.
For
the last few days since the
election, Iraqi officials are scrambling to accurately and quickly
report
results. Sadly, irregularities are reported in most, if not
all,
provinces. ... Some are reporting 99% approval of the
constitution,
-- highly unlikely statistically. Two out of three Sunni
provinces
are also reporting passage, which is also highly unlikely
politically.
Not surprisingly, the Sunnis are already claiming election fraud.
Texas is about to vote on a "defense of marriage" amendment to its state constitution. This amendment has been pushed by homophobic Right Wing fascists who claim the family unit will be lost in America should it not pass. Not one of these bigots, however, has explained precisely how. Nor can they, since the premise is irrational.
Should the amendment not pass, do they really believe their families will disintegrate? How about families of people who do not believe as they do? Will those families suddenly break up? Gays have reared children for many, many years. When was the last time one of those children turned out to be a mass murderer? Interestingly and in direct violation of the Right's expectations, most live heterosexual lives, raise families of their own, and are productive law-abiding members of society.
Sadly, the Right is hopelessly homophobic and bigoted. -- Where's the love prescribed by the head honcho of the religion they claim to embrace? Since when is it loving to deny people who have a sexual orientation different from ours the same rights we enjoy, provided it is between consenting adults?
The Right would be better advised to remedy the true causes of family "disintegration." Issues such as divorce, financial problems induced by inadequate pay, lack of healthcare insurance, physical and sexual abuse of children, violence in the home, unaffordable college and/or trade school tuition, etc.. The list can go on and on.
"Legislating" or "constitutionalizing" a religious belief is a direct violation of the First Amendment, i.e. church-state separation. The Right has disingenuously and falsely argued proscriptions against moral issues such as murder and theft are religious in origin, coming from the Ten Commandments. Not so. There have been proscriptions against murder and theft dating back at least to the Code of Hammurabi.
Moral prescriptions against many undesirable behaviors have been a part of life for thousands of years in civilized societies because such codes protect the rights of others, not necessarily because they are of religious origin. Amusingly, most atheists are highly ethical and moral people who are law-abiding. Despite their absence of religious belief.
While the Right is indeed entitled to embrace its perverse views and beliefs, it is not entitled to force them on others. Amusingly, the Right bristles when correctly labeled homophobic or fascist. Tough, isn't it? ... If the shoe fits... Joking aside, why is the Right so hopelessly myopic?
Why does it perceive only in terms of black and white? No shades of gray. No brilliant hues of color. Why is it so threatened by views that do not goose-step in line with its own? Why is it unable to mind its own business when it comes to hot button issues such as abortion or gay rights?
Most
important of all and to the
point, why is it so compelled to force its perverse views on all of
society
via legislation and constitutional amendments proscribing civil and
constitutional
rights and liberties?
In 1989, Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers completed a questionnaire stating she would support a constitutional amendment proscribing abortion with the exception of when the mother's life is threatened. She also disingenuously claims no one knows her position on Roe v. Wade.
Sadly, Ms. Miers is coyly playing the same old, tired BS game played by all Supreme Court nominees. Clearly, she is against abortion rights. The questionnaire proves it. She is also a member of an evangelical "Christian" Church that is strongly pro-life. Consequently, the pressure on her to rescind Roe, if given the opportunity, will be enormous.
As repeatedly stated on this website, no "judge" is truly impartial. Every damned one of them, is subject to their views and beliefs. Regardless of political party or ideology. Particularly, a fascist beholden to his or her church. Miers cannot be trusted to impartially interpret the law and Constitution. Consequently, her nomination to the Supreme Court should be rejected.
Interestingly,
the "President"
claimed at an Oct. 4 press conference he did not "know" Miers' position
on abortion. Mr. Bush is a liar. His press
secretary acknowledged
the "President" was indeed aware of the questionnaire before he
nominated
her.
Indirectly,
the U.S. Supreme Court
affirmed the abortion rights of a Missouri prison inmate who had been
denied
an abortion by state authorities. The High Court allowed
stand a
lower court ruling forcing the state to provide transportation to a
medical
facility. Interesting, isn't it? Thankfully, the
Supreme Court
still has a majority that believes in a woman's right to do with her
uterus
as she damn well pleases. ... At least as far as the first
few months
of gestation is concerned.
