CBS News Dan Rather Retirement March 10, 2005
CBS News anchor Dan Rather retired from the news desk last night. Shedding a tear? Imagine not. The Right sure isn't. For years, the recently disgraced news man seriously kicked fascist butt with gusto. ... Remember his days as a White House reporter during the Nixon Administration? Gave ole' "Tricky Dick" a run for his money.
Indeed, ole' Dan was his best in the field. Hard hitting investigative reporting and aggressively incisive questioning of government dolts were a mainstay. His reporting during the Chicago Democratic Convention of 1968 and throughout the Vietnam War was second to none. Coverage of the Kennedy assassination was masterful, leading to a meteoric rise at CBS.
As anchor, however, Rather was an enormous disappointment. For the last 24 years. Gone were the days of journalism at its best. Quaint euphemisms and increasingly erratic behavior became a distraction and disservice to viewers.
More importantly and sadly, he became part of the problem as managing editor and head news reader at CBS. -- A problem of political correctness and cowardly surrender to the crippling body politic always existent between high level government and news organizations.
No longer the brash young reporter, he was forced to bow to pressure inflicted by network "suits", -- executives responsible for the financial well-being and bottom line of a major corporation. ... Precisely, causing his behavior to appear increasingly erratic as he struggled to find and define his place as anchor.
What could have been the proverbial icing on the cake of an otherwise unblemished career, led to his downfall and retirement a year earlier than planned. -- False documents of the "President's" military service used by Rather to attack Bush shortly before the election.
Hard to believe ole' Dan, however, knew they were false as fervently claimed by the Fascist Right and other hopelessly mindless shills of the "President." -- Rather was too good a reporter to engage in outright deception. ... At least, this writer hopes so. More likely, ole' Dan was too much in a rush to scoop a story that had not been fully investigated before publication, pressured by an impending election. ... And one last crack at fame before retirement.
Regardless, CBS News and other media had more than sufficient time earlier to fully explore the "President's" military service. -- Two years prior to the 2000 election and nearly four years after. With nearly unlimited financial resources, there were, and are, no excuses for the sad fact the media did not get to the bottom of serious lingering questions, regarding alleged favorable treatment and unfulfilled military obligations by ole' George "The Tush". Questions still germane to the "President's" character, -- or lack thereof.
Rather, however, should have been absolutely sure of authenticity of records provided by his source before breaking the story. To this day, a review of these questionable records has curiously not led to determination of the truth or falseness of the substance behind them.
Interestingly, the elderly secretary of a military commander in charge at the time of the "President's" military service publicly claimed that although the documents were false, they were substantially true. Now, we'll apparently never know.
Disgracefully, executives at CBS have not insisted on subsequent full investigation and resolution of this issue. Why? Apparently, CBS has cowardly succumbed to political pressure brought by the Bush "Administration," and/or CBS corporate sponsors. ... As well as by shills in the Fascist Right, mindless idiots who wouldn't know truth if bitten hard on the ass. Wouldn't care anyway, -- as long as the Nazi securely remains in office.
Saddest of all, Rather himself has not resolved the issue, choosing instead to cowardly retire as anchor. To date, he's remained deafeningly silent, tritely regurgitating company propaganda, apparently to retain his position at 60 Minutes. ... Instead of courageously opening up with all guns figuratively blazing.
Now, there are no major mainstream networks left to challenge the fascist currently occupying the Oval Office. -- They've all cowardly succumbed to public, corporate, and government pressure to comply with the "company line" and phony propaganda embraced by Mr. Bush and his cronies.
Money is what drives the news industry. Bona fide investigative reporting immediately results in reduction of advertising income, since such reporting always steps on the toes of those with big money and power. Consequently, nearly all news is fluff and pomp. Or phony propaganda.
Critical issues continue to be conveniently and cowardly ignored by media shills of the "President." Such as a war fought under false pretenses. ... Or glowing "Administration" remarks about progress of that war that do not dovetail with reality on the ground. ... Or continuing torture and mistreatment of "detainees" at facilities around the world including Guantanamo.
... Or denial of constitutional rights of "terrorist" "suspects" in the United States including American citizens with no access to attorneys and the courts. ... Or outrageous attacks on liberty and civil and constitutional rights by the USA "Patriot" Act, Homeland "Security" Act, Class Action "Fairness" Act, etc., and other equally unconstitutional Executive Orders signed by the fascist occupying the White House. Sadly, the list can go on. In Nazi America. ... Then again, most of you couldn't care less, right?
Ironically,
Mr. Rather "enjoyed"
an approval rating under 25% and dropping at the time of
retirement.
... Amusingly, a red badge of courage and clear indication he must have
been doing something right. After all,
unlike Rather, the
vast majority of the American public is Right Wing, increasingly
fascist,
and aggressively stupid. -- God bless America.
We sure
as hell desperately need it.
